Busch Gardens Aldabra Tortoise Insider Tour
The Aldabra Tortoise Insider Tour is $19.99 per person and takes you inside the habitat of one of the largest tortoises in the world. Here we will get up close with one of the resident Aldabra Tortoises Bubba and have the opportunity to pet, feed him his favorite treats Sweet Potatoes and rub him with a brush.
The entire wild population of Aldabra's is restricted to a small group of coral islands north of Madagascar called Aldabra Atoll. Males can reach weights of up to 550lbs or more and females can average around 350lbs.
They feed primarily on vegetation but are opportunistic and flexible with their diet in order to get enough nourishment to survive. Aldabra Tortoises fill a niche similar to the one occupied by elephants in Africa and Asia. They are the main consumers of vegetation and altar the habitat during their search for food. Aldabra's have been known to knock over small trees and shrubs to obtain leaves. In turn knocking over the trees and shrubs makes clearings and pathways within the forestlands for other animals to use. Seeds pass through the tortoise's digestive tract and eventually become food for many other species.
The Aldabra Tortoise is one of the longest lived animals on earth. No one knows exactly how long these animals are capable of living. So far, the tortoises studied have outlived the scientists studying them.
Aldabra's are the only remaining species of 18 former species of tortoise that once flourished on the islands of the Indian Ocean.
