RISE OF THE MEGACITIES: IS CHINA AHEAD OF THE CURVE?
Suzhou Chinese: 苏州; Suzhounese pronunciation alternately romanized as Soochow, is a major city located in southeastern Jiangsu Province of East China, about 100 km (62 mi) northwest of Shanghai. It is a major economic centre and focal point of trade and commerce, and the second-largest city in the province, after its capital Nanjing. The city is situated on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the shores of Lake Tai and belongs to the Yangtze River Delta region.
Many of these people will be living in so-called megacities—urban areas with populations greater than ten million. Today there are only 28 such cities in the world. By 2030, there are expected to be 41.
Nearly all that growth will happen in Asia and Africa, according to U.N. projections, and 37 percent of the world’s urban expansion is expected to happen in just three countries: Nigeria, India, and China.
