Opening Wa‘a (Canoe) Ceremony for the 13th Festival of the Pacific Arts & Culture!

E komo mai (welcome) to the thousands of members of our Polynesian and Pacific Island ‘ohana (family) taking part in the 13th Festival of the Pacific Arts and Culture (FestPaC)! We were so proud to host a Waʻa (Canoe) Ceremony yesterday, June 5, 2024, at Kualoa Regional Park in the Hakipuʻu ahupua‘a (land division).
This ceremonial start to FestPAC symbolizes unity amongst the more than two dozen Pacific Island nations taking part in this historic occasion, as traditional canoes brought in representatives from all the participating nations. There was no shortage of sharing cultural practices along the shores of Kualoa, with endless displays of song, dance, prayer, giving of ho‘okupu (gifts), and aloha. So much so that we had to share all of the amazing moments we captured in this video montage!
The significance of Kualoa / Hakipu‘u in Hawaiian voyaging made this park the perfect place to begin the first FestPac to be hosted in Hawai‘i in the 52 years of the festival’s history! From these sandy shores the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s legendary wa‘a, Hōkūleʻa, made her initial departure on March 8, 1975. There were so many local voyaging societies and cultural practitioners who took part in this momentous FestPac occasion, including Kānehūnāmoku and the Hoe ‘Ohana. Along with many more partners who made yesterday a huge success, they all continue to contribute to our annual Canoe Fest, a legacy event for us at Honolulu Parks & Rec. Mahalo as well to the dedicated Kualoa staff, Honolulu Mayor's Office of Culture and the Arts, the Honolulu Police Department, Mayor Rick Blangiardi , and Governor Josh Green who helped to make the Opening Ceremony a day to remember!
