For years I've been telling
For years I've been telling myself I need to get a sight pusher. Didn't want to spend hundreds but also didn't want the ebay DIY creations either as they were over priced IMO.
Replaced front sight a few months back the old fashioned way, brass punch and a hammer (albeit a small hammer ;-). I wasn't unhappy with the results, all things considered (I'm a total amateur, but like learning and doing things myself as it builds skills), but I wouldn't be doing that again, especially on something nicer.
Poked around and decided on NCStar's VISM front/rear sight pusher. Can't be the price and this thing is built like a tank. Very functional for what you pay. But, the proof is in the pudding. Do, perfect timing to have some pudding.
As my amateur self QUICKLY found out (as I thought it would be as simple as mounting the pusher to my bench and pushing an old sight out and a new one in), I have a slide that is a bit abnormal and didn't quite fit the VISM (you'll see in the video).
I thought about modifying (my term for improving ;-) the VISM with some ideas on how to make it "grow" to accommodate larger slides, but ultimately found a faster and less labor intensive (i.e., time consuming) method of actually being able to fit the slide and use the tool.
Have to say, I'm impressed overall. My new sight was not made for this slide, but a close fit. I spent the MOST time filing and fine sanding (2000 grit) the new sight so it would fit. Once I did that, no over torque necessary and the slide eased in (obviously this thing puts out some force).
Again, for the money spent and the features it has, no complaints from me. But I also like to buy HF tools for things I'm only tinkering with at a hobbyist level. Anything I'm serious about, I usually dive in with the name brands. My smiting is minimal at most, but it's nice to have a tool to do the job correctly.
