Hello friends! I’m Madeleine Harvey! And today we are going to be exploring some possible ways that you may be sabotaging your singing and not even know it!  So if you like this video, remember to give it a big ole thumbs up!

So much of vocal development is about exploring your voice. And the level of awareness that is present as you sing is crucial. Think of singing as a unity between your mind and body. Both play equal parts.

1. Holding back
This is the biggest saboteur of singers because it reinforces hesitation.  That feeling of discomfort in your body reflects itself in your voice and is a huge damper to your confidence.  Singing is as much a mental practice as it is a physical one. So as you explore all the sounds that you are capable of, be sure to have a space that you can practice in and feel comfortable with making mistakes and missing notes. Also, strive to really explore your voice. Don’t always go straight for the “prettiest” sound.  That can reinforce hesitation as well. Making weird noises is all part of the learning process.  This gives you access through a temporary coordination that you would not have had otherwise. So be playful! This will help you release the judgment on yourself that can keep you stuck.

2. Over singing
Just like holding back, over singing can reinforce excess pressure on your voice as well as keep you from making more refined and balanced coordination’s. This can often times be due to the acoustics of the room you’re singing in. If the acoustics are really dry, you could end up over singing in an effort to hear yourself. So try to cup your hand in the tiny fold of your ear to give you a more accurate way of hearing yourself. If you find that you’re over singing to analyze the quality of every note that you sing, then that is what you are communicating to your audience as well.  As long as you are up in your head analyzing, you have created a sense of separation from your heart. People do not want to be sung at, they want to be engaged. Invited into the conversation. So don’t get so caught up on the notes that you forget you are still telling a story.

3. Rushing your progress
Singing is a lot like learning to be a ballerina who dances on those beautiful pointe shoes. There’s a lot of athleticism that goes into it and the end result looks effortless. It easy for us to bunny hop from exercise to exercise without fully developing healthy habits, sensations, and notes. Quality breeds quality. What you can do slow, you can do quickly. So be committed to the mastery of your instrument.  Stay tuned in to your voice. Set yourself up to have a great vocal experience by giving your muscles the time they need to develop.

4 Singing along with the radio
This one is sneaky because it can reinforce hesitation as well as over singing. You could be pushing to hear yourself over the original singer, or positioning yourself below the volume of the singer.  But the biggest aspect of sabotage here is mimicking the exact qualities of the other singer.  Don’t get me wrong; this is totally ok sometimes when the singer is presenting a quality that you’d like to learn. But where it is limiting is it locks you into a very specific experience that could inevitably keep you from exploring your own unique sound. It’s nice to sing like your hero’s, but it is just as crucial to develop the freedom to sing the song your way.  A good practice with this is to sing a cappella sometimes. That way, it’s just you, the melody and the lyrics. This will give you some space to play with the delivery and make it your own.
