A sad day at Manchester Museum of Science and Industry on Tuesday 5th January 2016 as the line here is to be cut back to allow Network Rail to put in a new curve at Ordsall to connect Piccadilly and Victoria stations, cutting across this historic section of track which was part of the original Liverpool and Manchester Railway.

As a farewell, the volunteers put both 2-2-0 "Planet" and 0-4-0ST "Agecroft No.1" in steam for a valedictory run.

Agecroft Number 1 was built in Newcastle in 1948 and worked at Agecroft Power Station about 3 miles away from the museum. Retired in 1980 after 32 years shunting coal wagons to feed the power station boilers, the locomotive was bought privately and saved from the scrapheap. Agecroft Number 1 arrived at the museum in 2008 in a dismantled state and after 3 years of restoration by the Volunteers and staff is back in full working order.

Planet is a modern replica of a Robert Stephenson steam locomotive used to haul trains on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830. The original Planet was the 9th locomotive built for the railway, and its design followed the famous Stephenson’s Rocket.w
