Scoliosis is a condition where your spine curves to the side. The curve may be 'C' or 'S' shaped, and it can lead to a variety of different symptoms, including back pain, reduced mobility, and - in severe cases - restricted breathing. Scoliosis affects roughly 3% of the population, which means that there are millions of people living with this condition worldwide. However, no two cases of scoliosis are exactly alike - the size and shape of the curvature can vary massively from one person to the next, as can the rate of progression and the severity of the patient's symptoms. All of this must be taken into consideration when determining how to treat scoliosis. Spinal fusion surgery (an operation that involves anchoring a series of rods to the spine) can be the only viable treatment for especially severe spinal curves, but observation, bracing and physical therapy can be effective in other cases. In approximately 8 out of 10 cases, scoliosis is 'idiopathic' (which means that there is no clear underlying cause). Idiopathic scoliosis normally develops between the ages of 10-15, often coinciding quite closely with the onset of puberty. More rarely, scoliosis can be found in young children - this is known as juvenile idiopathic scoliosis. Scoliosis may also be caused by an underlying condition such as osteoporosis, Marfan syndrome or syringomyelia. This video is provided by the Scoliosis SOS Clinic in London, UK. Using our own non-surgical treatment programme called ScolioGold, we help people with scoliosis to: - Reduce the angle and visibility of their spinal curvature - Increase their back strength - Reverse muscular imbalance - Achieve a better quality of life - Keep doing the activities they enjoy most Visit www.scoliosissos.com/ for more information about Scoliosis SOS and our non-surgical scoliosis treatment courses.
