Can you help me Plumbdog?!?!?!
Our client changed her own sacrificial anodes (which is best practice for preventative  maintenance) but with an anode purchased online and one which is the wrong size. Our client advised that the hot water had been sputtering and spitting ever since the anode was replaced.

Check out the video:

[0:29] COMPARING ANODES - Look at the state of the old anode that came with the system which has done quite well after 4 years compared to the new anode that has barely lasted weeks and is in worse condition.

[2:27] NEW ANODE - This is what a new anode should look like for this hot water system. Have a look side by side what a new proper anode looks like against the old anode that lasted 4 years vs the anode that was purchased online that has caused problems and looks in worse condition than the old anode that it replaced.

[3:05] CLEARING OUT THE DEBRIS - Check out the debris coming out of the system now from both the old and new sacrificial anode. We’ve done this long enough to know that there will be a good buildup of debris from the sacrificial anode sitting at the bottom of the tank.

Plumdog: It’s pointless just changing the anode without flushing out the tank. We call this a ‘tank flush’ where we flush out the tank with water and sometimes with our high powered water jetters to really clean the tank.

[4:00] OBSTRUCTION - Watch as water naturally slowly flows out of the hot water system being blocked by the sediment from the anodes. Richard has to dislodge the blockage with his screwdriver in order for water and debris to flow out of the system.

[4:40] A CLEANED TANK - Check out all the debris from the tank! All that white powder on the ground is from the storage unit of the hot water system. This is why taps and filters around the house get blocked and if you didn’t know why before, you’ll know why when you see all the debris flushed from the tank.

Changing the anode and a tank flush together go hand in hand. It’s almost pointless to do one without the other as changing the anode without a tank flush means the buildup of sediment in your tank and a tank clean alone means you may have an anode that no longer performs.

This just goes to show that it’s as important to know what needs to be done to have the job done right. If a licensed plumber had been called to begin with, the job would have been completed properly and these problems wouldn’t have happened. The customer would not have paid for anodes that did not perform, were not right for the tank and would not have wasted this time and extra money for what could have been a straight forward service.
