A skill matrix, or a competency matrix, is a grid-like framework that serves as a tool for mapping out and visualizing your employees’ skills and their skill levels while comparing them to the skill set needed to execute a given project. The skill matrix is a table where all of the skills necessary for a given project or team are outlined and compared with the skills each team member has. That way, as an employer, team leader, or boss, you can see what skills you have at your disposal and skills you are missing, thus identifying your team’s skill gap.
