After watching DIY Aquarium Filter video, you will have a good understanding of how to build a Aquarium Filter at home using plastic jar and submersible pump. The concept is very similar to a Canister Filter where the water from the aquarium flows to the bottom of a filter container and once mechanically filtered, it runs through all the biological or chemical filtration. Clean and filtered water flows back to the aquarium through a submersible pump located at the top of filter container. Let's go ahead with DIY Canister Filter build.
I have used a round air tight food container. All the supplies such as 10mm vinyl tube, garden tap connector, slip-on connector, tube joiner, elbow connector, suction cups, ratchet clamps are bought from a hardware store including a submersible pump which is key component in building aquarium filter. Use of air tight container is mandatory so there is no risk of water leaking through canister filter diy.
Mechanical filtration consists of a medium and fine foam. Biological filtration consists of heat treated ceramic rings. Water from the tank comes in contact with mechanical filter pads first and then passes through the bio media. If you have ever used a canister filter then you will be familiar with this design. I haven't used any silicone as all the connectors came with washers. I hope this video inspires you to build your own aquarium filter at home.
