Did the Babylonian Marriage Market as described by Herodotus really Exist? Daily Life in Mesopotamia

One of the most memorable passages from the traveler and historian Herodotus’ monumental work, Histories, is when he describes how a Babylonian marriage market worked.  But was this rather strange (he would say "wise" and "best") practice actually a thing in ancient Mesopotamia?  Let's take a look at the institution as well as marriage laws in ancient Mesopotamia.
