An unboxing and tutorial on the setup of the Synology DS3018XS.
My Synology 1512+ worked fantastically for me for years as a home NAS system. Not only did I use it to house my video projects and high resolution content, it also served as a basic file server and as the platform to run PLEX on. It gave me the throughput and speed I needed, and the RAID options get my data secure.
However, after 4+ years, I realized I needed more storage capacity, and with larger video files that are more highly compressed, I needed to play them in real time. The new Synology DS3018xs fit the requirements. 6 10TB drives, along with a faster processor, more RAM, and an expansion slot so I could put a 10GigE card in later and run to a future 10GigE switch for even more throughput.
I would have preferred a SAN, however, since the user count is low, and I don't need multiple users to have block level access, a NAS was a fine choice.
