This game runs on several arcade systems. By the time this game was released in Japan, there were lots of demands for this game. There are 4 versions of this game. When you want to play Sega Tetris by using Emulator MAME, you can see MAME supports ALL of them. It also supports bootlegs of System 16B and 16A.

- Sega System 16 Hardware : Original version. Released for System 16B at first, but 16A version was also released later.
- Sega System E Hardware(based on Sega Master System) : Down-grade version.
- Taito B System Hardware : Alternative version 1. Master of Weapon and Nastar(Rastan Saga 2 for Japan) conversion kit. Those conversion kits were sold for Taito Arcade centers ONLY.
- Taito H System Hardware : Alternative version 2. Go for the Gold(Record Breaker for Export) conversion kit. Like Taito B System hardware, this conversion kit was sold for Taito Arcade centers ONLY.
Taito B and H System conversion kits were sold for convert some unpopular games developed by Taito.

The arcade version of this game is released only in Japan. Sega comported this game for Mega Drive(Genesis in US, MD for short), but it failed because of copyright laws and the conflict between Atari and Nintendo for copyright laws of Tetris in early 1990s. MD version is finally came out in 2019, the same year that the console Mega Drive Mini is released.

Unlike other classic Tetris games, Sega Tetris has its own rule. Same as other classic Tetris games, it also doesn't contain modern rules like Hold, Spin, Back to Back. However, it contains Infinity-like rule that you can rotate or move blocks within certain seconds right after block is placed. It has intervals that comes down and stick completely.

This game has no endings. You can continuously play after the score comes 999999, lines come 999, and level comes to 99. Right after you reach level 15, blocks comes down at the fastest speed until the game is over. It will be changed by changing Dip switch settings(Easy-Normal-Hard-Hardest).

일본 내에서 테트리스를 알린 작품. 제 3회 게메스트 대상 수상작. 국내에서는 아타리 게임즈 테트리스가 잘 알려져 있으나, 반대로 일본에서는 본 작품이 가장 잘 알려진 테트리스이다. 물론 이후 아리카 제작의 테트리스 더 그랜드 마스터로 넘어가면서 그쪽의 인지도가 더 높은 편이다. 그러나 일본 내 일부 게임센터에서는 2020년대 현재까지도 본 작품을 가동하고 있는 경우가 제법 있다.

- 이야깃거리 -
당시 일본 내에서 본 작품의 인기는 하늘을 찔렀다. 본래는 시스템 16B 기판으로 출시가 되었는데, 수요가 워낙에 많아서 다양한 버전들로 출시가 되었다. 에뮬레이터 MAME에서는 해당 버전들을 모두 지원한다.

- 시스템 16B 기판 버전 : 원본.
- 시스템 16A 기판 버전 : 16A 버전의 재고 처리용으로 출시되었다.
- 시스템 E 기판 버전 : 저가형. 세가 마스터 시스템을 베이스로 만든 아케이드 기판이 시스템 E 기판. 시스템 16B나 16A에 비하면 열화된 그래픽, 음질, 해상도를 가지고 있지만, 그만큼 본 작품이 인기가 있었다는 것을 보여주는 부분.

- 타이토 B 시스템 기판 버전 : 타이토 직영 게임센터 한정으로만 출시된 버전 가운데 하나. 라스탄 사가 2와 마스터 오브 웨폰 두 작품을 교체하기 위해 제작. 그러나 컨포팅 시한이 많이 짧아서 그래픽 정도만 원본과 같고, 사운드나 자잘한 측면에서는 차이가 있다.
- 타이토 H 시스템 기판 버전 : 고 포 더 월드 교체용. 타이토 직영 게임센터 한정으로만 출시. B 시스템 기판으로 이식하던 때와는 달리 비교적 시간 여유가 있어서, 제법 원본에 가깝게 이식되었다. H 시스템 버전만의 요소들도 탑재했는데, 커맨드를 입력하는 것으로 게임 모드를 바꿀 수 있었다.

클래식 테트리스 계열이긴 하나, 본 작품은 인피니티와 유사한 시스템을 지원한다. 블록이 떨어지고 붙는 소리가 나와도, 특정 프레임 이내에서는 블록을 움직이거나 회전시킬 수 있다. 낙하 속도가 가장 빠름으로 고정되는 레벨 15 이상부터는 본 시스템을 활용하지 않으면 어렵다.

전원을 껐다 켜면 블록이 내려오는 순서가 초기화된다. 또는 테스트 모드에 들어갔다 나와도 순서가 초기화된다. 이를 전원 패턴이라고 한다. 전원 패턴을 숙지하고 있으면 어떤 테트로미노들이 내려올 것인가를 알고 있다는 의미가 되므로, 단시간에 높은 점수를 얻을 수 있는 고난이도의 테크닉. 타이토 B 시스템에서 사용된 전원 패턴은 오리지널 시스템 16B, 16A의 것과 다르게 내려온다.

본 작품에 사용된 배경 음악은 이후 긴 시간이 지나서 다시 쓰였는데, 동사에서 제작한 뿌요뿌요 테트리스에서 어레인지되었다. 곡 제목은 Block by Block ~ Beat by Beat.
