Writing your dissertation literature review
Writing your dissertation literature review often involves saying, “I can’t find ANY work on this topic!” multiple times. However, this can be a good thing because if there was existing academic literature on the exact topic you’re researching, you wouldn’t be happy about that either! You’d be like, “Someone else has already done this, I need to change my topic!”.
So, how do you find literature for your literature review when there isn’t anything on the exact topic you’re researching? Well, there are several things you can do here.
You can broaden out your search terms to look for literature on topics that are related but not exactly the same thing.
You can get creative with your literature search terms to ensure you’re using the right keywords and key phrases to get you to the studies you need to read.
You can also explore the literature in other disciplines, going beyond your subject area to uncover knowledge developed in parallel or completely different subject areas.
And finally, you can talk to people. Network with people both within and outside your discipline, tell them all about your research, and you’ll be surprised how many new literature search leads this can generate.
