The Persian Empire is the name given to a series of dynasties centered on modern Iran that spanned several centuries, from the 6th century BC. C. until the 20th century d. C. The first Persian empire, founded by Cyrus the Great around the year 550 a. C., it became one of the largest empires in history, from the Balkan peninsula of Europe in the west to the Indus valley of India in the east. This Iron Age dynasty, sometimes called the Achaemenid Empire, was a world center of culture, religion, science, art and technology for more than 200 years before falling into the hands of the invading armies of Alexander the Great. At its height, the Persian Empire extended for 5.5 million square kilometers. The Persian Empire focused on Persia, modern Iran, and ruled over the Anatolian Peninsula, Egypt, much of today's Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Historians adopted the name "Persian" to describe the ethnic origin of the legendary founder Cyrus the Great and, for convenience, associate the empire with the capital (Persis / Persia).
