Amtrak's new Phase II "Heritage"
Amtrak's new Phase II "Heritage" unit #130 led the eastbound California Zephyr through Iowa on April 9th, 2018. This was the engine's first rotation on the Zephyr since being released from Beech Grove in Heritage paint last month. I caught the train as it stopped in Ottumwa, Iowa, at the Amtrak station downtown. I just happened to set up right near where the locomotives came to a stop on the platform, so I had plenty of time to get pictures from several angles before the train's departure. Due to a rockslide the previous day in Colorado, the Zephyr arrived in Ottumwa almost five hours late.
P42 locomotive #130 is the second diesel to wear the "Heritage" variation of the Phase II paint scheme, introduced in the 1970's, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Amtrak in 2011. The original Phase II heritage unit, P42 #66, was involved in a grade crossing collision in Illinois a few years ago, causing considerable damage to the unit's frame. It will most likely be scrapped sometime in the future. As a replacement, Amtrak painted locomotive #130 in the Phase II paint scheme early this year.
I never had any luck catching engine 66. I only saw it in the trailing position once, and saw it briefly on a stopped train in Kansas City, shortly before its collision. I never saw it leading a moving train! Now I've already seen engine 130 on its first westbound assignment, so I think this is a good sign...now I can finally say I've caught all of Amtrak's specially painted P40/P42 locomotives leading a train, at least once (Veterans #42, Phase I #156, Phase II #130, Phase III #145 and #822, Phase IV #184).
