STORYLINE:

Amid tight security Afghans celebrated 83 years of indpendence from Britain on Monday.

In the capital Kabul, Independence Day ceremonies were largely confined to the city stadium.

People waved the black, red and green national flag, and watched martial arts and parachute displays.

Celebrations also included a student parade and the firing of old rifles seized from the British.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai, his Cabinet, and ex-king Mohammad Zaher Shah attended the celebrations - and security at the event was tight.

Afghan authorities said the traditional military parade had been cancelled to save money.
