On this day in 1943, allied authorities declared Guadalcanal secure after Imperial Japan evacuated its remaining forces from the island. This ended the Battle of Guadalcanal. Here's British Movietone's report on the events soon afterwards.
The US Marines round up Japanese prisoners on Guadalcanal.
Landing barges carrying US soldiers approaching beach (into camera), ammunition is brought ashore, also bombs. CU of Colonel Carlson & son. Marines attempting to shave companion with captured Japanese sword. Japanese prisoners march off escorted by Marines. Brigadier General Rupertus shakes hands on leaving with Army Major General Patch.
