Today we are about to dive into the tragic story of the 1995 K2 disaster in the Karakoram. This story reminds us of the dangers mountaineers face on their quest to reach the summit of K2, one of the most deadliest mountains on the planet. In the late K2 summer climbing season, the remnants of several unsuccessful expeditions made one last attempt at the summit.
During one of the most worst storms ever witnessed in the history of K2, six climbers tragically lost their lives, while heading down from the summit in late hours. Four climbers were left to fight for their survival on the slopes. One among them, Jeff Lakes, later died due to sheer exhaustion in Camp 2. What happened amidst the harsh weather was a harrowing tale of strength and determination. Peter Hillary, Jose Garces and Lorenzo Ortas were the lucky survivors.
