Conditional formatting in Microsoft Excel allows you to format cells based on particular conditions or specified rules. We can apply many formatting styles, such as changing the font color, font style, background color of cell or a table, or adding icons based on the values in the cells, column or rows. We don't typically use functions directly in conditional formatting, but we set up conditions using formulas or terminology.
Here is step-by-step guide how to use functions and formulas in conditional formatting in Excel:
Select the Range: First, select the range of cells to which you want to apply conditional formatting. You can select a single cell, a column, a row, or a specific data range of cells.
Conditional Formatting Menu: Go to the "Home" tab on the Excel ribbon.
Conditional Formatting: Click on the "Conditional Formatting" button in the "Styles" group. This will open a dropdown menu with various options.
New Rule: To create a new conditional formatting rule using a formula or function, click on "New Rule." This will open the "New Formatting Rule" dialog box.
Select a Rule Type: In the "New Formatting Rule" dialog box, you'll see various rule types. To use a function or formula, select "Use a formula to determine which cells to format."
Enter the Formula: In the "Format values where this formula is true" field, enter your formula or function. The formula should evaluate to either TRUE or FALSE, where TRUE indicates that the formatting should be applied.
If you want to highlight Maximum (highest) Value or Minimum (Lowest) value in your table we will use New Rule option and then select “use a Formula to Determine which cells to format”.
Start formula for example for Maximum value use following formula
=A1=MAX(A$1:F$10)
Now click format button and set you desired format (colors, font style, cell color etc) and click ok.

Start formula for example for Minimum value use following formula
=A1=MIN(A$1:F$10)
Now click format button and set you desired format (colors, font style, cell color etc) and click ok. Note: use different color for MAX and MIN Value for easy findings.

This formula will highlight our minimum value in the whole table rang from cell A1 to F10.

If you want to high light Top (Highest) or Bottom (Lowest) value in a Single Column or Row:
Select the desired column or row and go to conditional formatting.
Click new rule
Choose Format Only top or bottom ranked values.
In the description selection Top from drop down list. And change value from 10 to 1. Set your format (color, style etc) for top value and click ok.
Similarly Select the desired column or row and go to conditional formatting.
Click new rule
Choose Format Only top or bottom ranked values.
In the description selection Bottom from drop down list. And change value from 10 to 1. Set your format (color, style etc) for Bottom value and click ok.

In the "Conditional Formatting Rules Manager" dialog box, you'll see a list of rules. Select the rule you just created and click "Apply" or "OK" to apply the conditional formatting to the selected range.
The selected cells will now be formatted according to the conditions specified in your formula or function. If the formula evaluates to TRUE, the formatting will be applied; otherwise, it won't.
we can add multiple conditional formatting rules to a single range, allowing you to create complex formatting based on different conditions. Just be aware that the rules are applied in the order they appear in the "Conditional Formatting Rules Manager" dialog box, so make sure to arrange them accordingly if they overlap.
