Kayhan Kalhor is the master
Kayhan Kalhor is the master of the Iranian Kamancheh. Thanks to his many collaborations with musicians from other cultures - from the Malian kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté to the American string quartet Brooklyn Rider - he is internationally known.
The project with the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio is one of Kalhor's most intriguing: “You cannot categorize it. It is neither jazz nor classical music, it is just something we do with our instruments that is all about improvisation.”
The instruments are remarkable to say the least. Rembrandt Frerichs plays a fortepiano, based on a 1790 model that Mozart played. Bassist Tony Overwater plays a violone, a six-string baroque instrument that is the predecessor of the double bass. Percussionist Vinsent Planjer uses a range of historical and oriental percussion instruments.
