History buffs will get a rare chance to see the woodblocks of the Tripitaka Koreana,... which are on display this month at a festival celebrating the UNESCO-designated collection of Buddhist scriptures.

The Tripitaka Koreana is a collection of Buddhist teachings and laws carved on more than 80-thousand wooden printing blocks.
It was created in the 13th century in an effort to defend the nation against the Mongolian invasion,… and is currently housed at Haein Temple in Gyeongsangnam-do Province.
The wooden blocks, designated as a national treasure and included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register, are being showcased during this year's global Tripitaka festival.
The festival also shows how the blocks were created at the time, and the audience will be able to take a close look at other archival records like the March 1 Declaration of Independence.

The Tripitaka Koreana festival was first held in 2011 to celebrate the millennial anniversary of the original 11th century carving.
This year's festival, the third of its kind, will be held until November 5th at the Record Culture Theme Park in Hapcheon County, Gyeongsangnam-do Province.
