With gestures like these, Barack Obama is reaching out to the Muslim world ...
((working receiving line with Turkish officials))
... opening two days in Turkey on his FIRST overseas trip as president ...
  ((wreathlaying))
... honoring modern Turkey's founder, Ataturk, at his tomb...

  ... holding talks with Turkey's present-day leaders ...
  ((To newser walkout or cutaway))
... and hailing a country that's both in Europe AND Asia as a bridge between East and West.
OBAMA SOT: (3:45 from start of Obama/Abdullah Gul newser) "I'm trying to make a statement about the importance of Turkey not just to the United States but to the world."

But that approach has a practical side. As a key Muslim ally and longtime NATO member ...

Speaking to Turkey's parliament, the president acknowledged the anger.
OBAMA SOT: (Approx 20:30 from start of speech) "I know there have been difficulties these last few years. I know that the trust that binds the United States and Turkey has been strained"
  ((Cutaways Parliament))
And he spoke directly to Muslims who think the war on terror is aimed at them.
OBAMA SOT: (Approx 21:00 from start) "So let me say this as clearly as I can: the United States is not at war with Islam."
((To MORE street scene from Jason's footage))
Among the proud Turks, Obama's outreach went down well.

VOXPOP SOT: "We like him very much. He's a good person. He's a good guy. He's a good guy."
  ((Standup close))
The president has made repairinig ties with the Muslim world a top priority. In fact even AFTER this visit, Obama intends a major speech soon in ANOTHER Muslim capital. For many Muslims, after eight years of George W. Bush, THIS kind of attention is a breath of fresh air.
