April 6 is Tartan Day! On this day in 1320, the Declaration of Arbroath was signed.

The Declaration of Arbroath was a formal letter which set out to confirm Scotland's status as an independent, sovereign state as well as its use of military action when unjustly attacked.
Written in Latin, it was sent to Pope John XXII in April (or May) of 1320. The Declaration was one of three letters sent to the Pope.

Abbot Bernard of Arbroath Abbey most likely drafted it on behalf of the nobles and barons of Scotland.

The other letters included one from King Robert Bruce himself and one from four Scottish bishops, attempting to abate papal hostility.

Of these, the Declaration is the sole survivor. The hand-written parchment received the seals of several Scottish barons and was then taken to the papal court at Avignon in France by Sir Adam Gordon.

In honor of Tartan Day 2020, we have done a dramatic reading of this very moving and powerful document – one which probably influenced the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

Please note we have altered a few small details of the Declaration (mainly taking out some personal names and a few details of medieval imagined Scottish history) to make it flow better as a dramatic reading.
