How to frost a cake

Learn to make a professional-looking frosted cake with smooth sides and an even coating of frosting. Watch the steps in our tip video, and see how the finished result should look.

Instructions: Start by placing your crumb-coated cake on a cake stand. With a spatula or spoon, dollop a generous amount of frosting onto the top of the cake.

Use an offset spatula to create a thick, even layer of frosting.

Generously apply frosting to the sides of the cake. Don’t be shy! You’ll need a thick layer.

Use a bench knife to smooth the sides of the cake.

Use an offset spatula to carefully smooth the top of the cake.  

To remove any excess frosting, use the tip of an offset spatula.

Refrigerate the cake for 30 minutes, or until the frosting has set. Once the cake has set, use an offset spatula to loosen the base of the cakes. Carefully bend the cardboard base away from the cake, and carefully remove the cardboard.

Transfer the cake to a serving plate, and decorate!
