What is an Electrochromic Rear-View Mirror?

When ordering windshield replacement you might be asked "Do you have an electric rear-view mirror?" The correct nomenclature is "Electrochromic" however it may be referred to as electric or electronic mirror. The best way to tell is if there is a wire running to your mirror. If you see a plastic piece running along the inside surface of the glass from the headliner to the base of the mirror you can rest assured there's a wire there. Another clue is any electronic display in the mirror like in this 1999 Chevrolet Silverado, there's the compass display in the top right corner. Any buttons, lights or anything that uses electricity is electrochromic. However, the term electrochromic itself is referring to a "self-dimming" feature which has a sensor or sensors on the mirror to monitor light quantity reducing glare from the headlights of driver's behind you without the need for you to physically readjust the mirror's position. A basic or non-electric mirror will have only a flip-tab at the base of the mirror which aides in manual adjustment.
