People with atrial fibrillation (AFib) are at an increased risk of stroke caused by blood clots that form in the heart. Blood thinners are an option for those affected by AFib. However, blood thinners may not be the best solution for everyone.
The Watchman™ Device may be an alternative to blood thinners for patients with AFib. This small device, about the size of a quarter, fits permanently inside the heart's chamber, where clots are likely to form. Dr. Daniel Edmundowicz: I'm Dr. Daniel Edmundowicz at Temple Health. AFib is one of the most common heart problems. A heart that's electrically out of sync can lead to blood clots forming in certain heart chambers that can then travel to the brain, raising the risk of stroke.
For decades, blood thinners have been the standard treatment to reduce stroke risk in patients with AFib. However, getting the right balance — enough to prevent clots but not risk bleeding — is a challenge.
The Watchman, a small device about the size of a quarter, is changing that. It fits permanently inside the heart chamber where clots are most likely to form. Watchman eliminates the need for frequent blood tests and lifestyle changes associated with being on long-term blood thinners.
And in clinical trials, 9 out of 10 patients could stop taking the blood thinner Warfarin just 45 days after getting the Watchman without an increased risk of stroke from AFib.
