When he graduated from high school 31 years ago, Douglas Bonner says he had three choices of what to do next: enlist in the Army, become a truck driver, or join the railroad.

For a person who hails from a family of railroaders, including several cousins and uncles, it was a no brainer – he signed on with Norfolk Southern.
“I was made to become a railroader,” said Bonner, who grew up in Birmingham and now is a locomotive engineer based at NS’ Inman Yard in Atlanta. “I always wanted to be an engineer. I graduated high school and came straight to the railroad. It’s the first and only job I’ve had in my life.”
You could call Bonner a “glass is half full” kind of person, an attitude that shines brightly in the latest Pulling Together: Voices at NS video.

These days, Bonner runs trains out of NS’ rail yard at East Point. Five days a week, he operates a mixed-commodities train that delivers corn syrup to an Atlanta-area Coca-Cola manufacturing plant, tank cars to a refrigerant company that services big warehouse coolers, and vehicles to an automotive transportation company that serves area Ford, Dodge, and Hyundai dealerships.

Bonner loves what he does. “My job is not just a job, it’s literally a passion for me. I enjoy it every day, man.” He is especially proud to be a railroader now, providing an essential service to communities in this time of COVID-19.

“It gives me a big sense of responsibility and a good sense of pride, too, knowing that the work we do literally keeps the world moving,” he said. “We keep our wheels rolling to keep the world rolling.”
