International rescue teams are heading to Morocco to help search for survivors following the devastating earthquake that has killed more than 2,000 people.

The epicentre of the 6.8-magnitude quake was about 45 miles (72km) southwest of Marrakesh in the High Atlas mountains, with tremors felt as far away as Portugal. Most of the dead — 1,351 — were in the mountain district. The remote terrain has hampered rescue operations, with dislodged boulders blocking roads and some villages finding themselves cut off. In some small villages the whole population appeared to have been entirely or mostly wiped out.
