Did you know that Barium Titanite was the first-discovered inorganic compound with perovskite structure demonstrating a ferroelectric effect?

Barium Titanite (BaTiO3) is a ceramic material demonstrating photorefractive effect and piezoelectric properties.  

In powder form, it can be synthesized by either the sol–hydrothermal method, or by heating barium carbonate and titanium dioxide. Single crystals can also be grown from molten potassium fluoride at high temperatures.

The compound is soluble in several acids, including sulfuric and hydrochloric acid. It is insoluble in alkalis and water. Thanks to its spontaneous electric polarization in the absence of an external applied electric field (ferroelectricity), it is often used in electronic and electro-optic devices and as a piezoelectric material in sensors and actuators, such as microphones, acoustic emitters, capacitors and transducers.

It has good electrical properties at room temperature, is both mechanically and chemically stable and is relatively easy to prepare. This is why it is one of the most researched perovskites.
