Pari was born in 1993 in Pakistan, where the family of twelve had fled to escape the Taliban. When Pari was five and the Taliban nightmare was over, they all returned to Kabul. At the age of six, she had her first little role in a film. At this point, Pari is a star. She can be heard almost every day on the radio, seen on television, and over a quarter million fans have listened to her on youtube. An exclusive wedding engagement, where she performs her pop­style songs and sings about love, yearning, and eternal faithfulness, can cost up to 5.000 US $. Through her CD’s, films, and live performances she provides for the whole family. But in Afghanistan’s conservative society, a singer like Pari Guhlami is a whore – she is explicitly called that – and pop music is evil and a sin. Not only she, but her father as well, are constantly being threatened, even with imminent death.
