Today we’re focusing on divorce with children, specifically on understanding divorce effects on children. We’re going to look at the ways divorce affects children, but we’re going to do it through a lens that empowers you to help your kids instead of leaving you feeling overwhelmed and helpless on the sidelines.
Let’s dive into divorce with kids.
You’ve read the statistics. Divorce effects on children include:
Behavioral problems
Poor academic performance
Mental health issues,
Increased chance of addiction development
And so on.
I need you to press a big PAUSE button in your brain right now, and take a mental shift with me.
Statistics do not predict the outcome for an individual child. The fact that 70% of prison inmates grew up in a broken home doesn't mean your kids will end up in jail.
If you look at the divorce effects on children through the lens of statistics you’re going to freak out. Your brain reads “300 times more likely to develop mental health disorders” and you go into overwhelm and panic.
Statistics paint a picture that is useful in some contexts. But it is a picture that lacks detail and depth. It’s a 30,000 foot aerial view.
Let’s paint a picture that is more useful for you down here at ground level, where real life is happening for you and for your kids.
We’ll do that by looking at divorce with kids through an attachment lens.
