A galaxy is a gravitationally bound system of stars, planets, supernova remnats, interstellar dust and dark matter.  Around 200 billion galaxies are present in the universe  there are galaxies that consume other galaxies, and galaxies that seem to lack the dark matter that pervades the rest of the universe.
