Radiant barrier works by reflecting radiant heat that is transferred from the sun through a roof into an attic space.  Unlike traditional insulations like fiberglass and cellulose that are designed to slow down the transfer of heat into a living space, a radiant barrier will block approximately 97% of this radiant heat from entering livings spaces below an attic making a home less susceptible to heat gain in the summer months. A radiant barrier even works in the winter by blocking the loss of radiant heat from the living spaces up into the attic during winter months.

Therefore, a radiant barrier installed in your attic can significantly lower your utility bills year round by blocking heat gain in the summer months and heat loss in the winter months.

Exactly how does a radiant work?

Heat moves from one location to another via three different heat transfer methods:

Conductive heat transfer (conduction),
Convective heat transfer (convection), and
Radiant heat transfer (radiation).

Experts claim a majority of homes today are under-insulated per the Department of Energy and while most homes have one of many different types of conventional insulation, conventional insulation alone cannot stop the transfer of radiant heat into and out of living spaces.

Studies have shown that in the warmer months, up to 93% of heat gain in a home is due to radiant heat transfer and in cooler months, up to 75% of heat loss is due to radiant heat transfer.  Therefore, it's crucial to address this type of heat gain and heat loss to lower your utility bills.

RadiantGUARD® radiant barrier foil insulation is designed to BLOCK 97% of the radiant heat that strikes it's surface keeping heat out during the warmer months and in during the cooler months improving the comfort of your home, reducing the strain on your heating and cooling units, and lowering your monthly utility bills.
