Julian Newman holds the world record for the 50 shot challenge created by @innovative_training. NBA pros and major D1 guards have tried this challenge and their times are on average 4-6 minutes to complete. Julian Newman shattered that time with 3:16 minutes. The statistics are staggering. Julian Newman, a small sophomore guard at Downey Christian — one of the smallest schools in Orlando — is already playing his sixth season on varsity and has scored more points than any boys basketball player in Florida high school history. He’s averaging 31.4 points per game this season. His free-throw percentage, 93.2 on 235 attempts, would rank third in the NCAA and third in the NBA – just behind J.J. Redick (93.5). His 211 made 3-point shots are an average of 6.2 per game, well ahead of the 4.4 per game former First Academy standout and current college basketball leader Fletcher Magee is averaging for Wofford. Julian and Jaden make — not take — 500 practice shots each and every day. That regimen includes 200 stationary shots from beyond the 3-point line and 100 more threes off the dribble, plus 100 floaters and 100 mid-range shots. “Not almost every day. Every day,” said their dad, Jamie Newman, Downey Christian’s coach and a former Colonial High point guard. There is no questioning the dedication. But the doubters, and there are many, question the validity of the eye-popping stats and scoff at the media attention. The Newman kids dream big. Julian has said for years that he’ll choose Kentucky for college ball on his way to the NBA. “My goal is so high that people may laugh at me for it,” he said last week. “I want to be the best basketball player that ever lived.” Some might laugh. Some do fire verbal or social media shots at the pint-sized shot-maker. Julian plays in front of bigger crowds than his sister does, and opposing student sections often greet him with chants of “Ohh-ver-rate-ed.” “I like it. Obviously they know who I am,” Julian said with a smile. Julian is listed at 5-foot-7 and that’s probably generous. “My skills have to be better than everybody else’s,” he said of almost always being the smallest player on the court. “It’s an advantage, honestly. I have quickness.” Julian has amassed 3,873 career points according to Downey’s stat sheets. That surpasses the recognized Florida prep record of 3,744 set in four seasons (1994-98) by legendary Cape Coral Mariner guard Teddy Dupay, who went on to star at Florida before off-court troubles derailed his college career. #HoopJourney Subscribe To Our Second Channel Hoop Journey 2:    / @hoopjourneyii   LIKE, COMMENT, SUBSCRIBE!
