What is Ubud Bali Really Like?? (Is it Worth the Visit?)

I certainly loved our time in Ubud Bali, but I think this was due largely to where we stayed. Our hotel was about a 30 minute walk outside of downtown Ubud and it was surrounded by lots of hiking trails and things to do that were not touristy. Whenever we walked through downtown Ubud I felt uncomfortable due to the crowds. We took a cab through Ubud one evening and got stuck in a complete stand still traffic jam for almost an hour. My advice for Ubud is to definitely visit it, but expect crowds. I would definitely recommend staying outside of the city and doing some of the more local walks like we did (I made a lovely self guided walking tour  if you'd like https://bumblingtourist.com/2023/06/0... ). Ultimately you know best what your tolerance for crowds is, and we know that crowds are not our jam... we'd much rather get lost in a jungle without a single tourist around. Whatever you decide, we hope you enjoy your trip to Ubud! Feel free to leave any questions down below, and we'll do our best to respond!
We walked to the place where we had dinner the night before “Warung Pulan Kelapa” and had lunch. I had a dish called Kelapa Gado Gado (I think) a peanut sauce dip with egg,  lettuce, spinach, cabbage and potato to dip in it. Jives had a Tempe Pehyet, an Indonesia braised tempe with spicy sambal sauce. Both meals were delicious and from the “Angkiringan” area of Indonesia.
We then walked into Ubud town proper, stopping at “Pura Dalem Ubud” and paying 10,000 each to enter the temple. The attendant wrapped us both up in a sarong and sash and we set off to explore. The temple was the first we had been in since arriving in Indonesia, and the carving style was unlike anything we had seen in South East Asia. So many individual adorable faces were carved on every surface.
After thoroughly exploring Pura Dalem Ubud, we walked towards Ubud Palace. At this point the weather was getting pretty severe, the wind was picking up and there was almost constant thunder. I wanted to enter Saraswati Temple but it was so busy (we went back the next day) and my anxiety said “no”, so instead we went into the Ubud Palace. We walked around the beautiful gardens of the palace and explored a bit until the rain began, it came down hard! We retreated to our favourite corner store to have a drink and hide from the rain. There were school children everywhere splashing in the puddles and running down the street, they were clearly having more fun than us! We made it back to our room and dried off a bit before heading out for supper at “C9UPAC” a Korean fusion place. I had delicious bibimbap and Jives had a fried chicken dish where you wrap everything in lettuce leaves. We then walked back to our hotel and played pictionary in our new book we purchased at the department/ grocery store.
