How to make these Tahitian earrings using 2” long 20 gauge (0.8mm) thick sterling silver head pins. I find machine cut head pins are a perfect hack for earrings because they are pre-smoothened! If you have to cut the length, be sure to sand any sharp edges smooth.
I like using 20 gauge because it’s the right thickness to retain shape and avoid easy warping in the future. Half hard is ideal for the pins. However, you can work harden soft or thinner gauge pins by hammering them. Simply bend the pin over the pearl and use a shaping tool (I chose the end of a marker). Once the desired shape is achieved, you can harden the ear wire by hammering it lightly.
