DENJIRO: I've prepared this device here today. I'm going to show you an interesting experiment. Let me put some marshmallows into the transparent box that's attached to a machine. I'm going to cover the box and close it tight. Now, I'll turn on the machine.
GIRL: The marshmallows got bigger!
DENJIRO: This machine is a vacuum pump, which can suck the air out of a container. Let me explain using a balloon. I'll place it in the box, cover the box, and turn on the machine. Air will get sucked out of the machine, and the pressure inside will drop. The air inside the balloon expands, and so the balloon gets bigger. The same thing happened with the marshmallows earlier. A space that has no air is called a vacuum. Let me show you another fun experiment using this vacuum pump. This is a petri dish with some water in it. I'm going to put it in the container and cover it. Let me turn on the machine.
GIRL: The water is bubbling!
DENJIRO: Let me take out the petri dish.
GIRL: The water froze!
DENJIRO: When we turned on the machine, we saw big bubbles come out. This is steam that came out as the water started to boil. When the pressure drops, the boiling point drops as well, so the water boils at a temperature below 100 degrees Celsius. When water boils, it loses its heat because of the heat of vaporization, and the temperature drops. Because the temperature of the water kept dropping, it turned into ice. As you can see, a vacuum can create lots of mysterious phenomena!
