I talk about four main types of banks in this short video. There are more financial institutions that can perform some services of a typical bank.
Retail banks, the banks that deal with general public. You probably have an account at a retail bank. They offer loans and some provide credit cards along with other services.
Commercial banks on the other hand focus on business customers. Companies, starting from small businesses to large corporations also need checking accounts just like individuals do. And commercial banks provide that service to them.
Investment banks also cater to corporate clients. But the service they provide is different. They help companies with more complex financial services like underwriting, and assisting with mergers and acquisitions.
Then you have the central bank. They do not deal with the public. They are responsible for the monetary system of the country and they will look over all the other banks as well.
