The Chuck Wagon Gang is a country gospel group originally formed in 1935 and is remarkably still going strong to this very day. Started by David P. "Dad" Carter, eldest son Ernest "Jim" Carter and daughters Lola "Rose" Karnes and Effie "Anna" Gordon. Their first foray into music was via KFYO radio in Lubbock, Texas, and officially took their name when they moved to WBAP in Fort Worth as sponsored singers for  Bewley Flour in 1936. The radio work would lead to a contract with Columbia records that would last for a record 39 years (that record would stand until Johnny Mathis broke it in 2000). The quartet was, at one point, Columbia's number one group with over 39 million in record sales.

The original members stayed together until 1955 when Dad retired, followed by Jim a while after. Younger sons Eddie and Roy Carter would step in to take their place singing tenor and bass respectively. This would start the tradition of passing down parts to children and eventually grand children. The original group did it, all having played at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Grand Ole Opry, made the Gospel Music Hall Of Fame and found their way into the Smithsonian Institution's Classic American Recordings selection.

In the mid 1970s, the group decided to move on from Columbia due to lacking support from a label they gave so much to, and in 1979 the began recording for Copperfield Records. They eventually ended up with Associated Artists in the 1980's and experienced a bit of resurgence in popularity. They tried adding a piano player for live shows and changed a few things up sound-wise to positive response from fans which would culminate in the group winning "Best Gospel Group in Country Music" award in 1988.

Over the next 4 decades, Roy would approach Anna's granddaughter to the group, and other older members would retire, being replaced by younger family members and around the turn of the millennium the group no longer had any children of Dad Carter singing, but rather included grand and great grandchildren. This lineup decided to simplify their sound back to the old days of four-part harmony and a simple single guitar backing them, once again to positive praise from fans. The group is still going strong and recording on the Crossroads Music label.

Today's song is from that original four entitled "We Are Climbing", originally written and composed by Wilbur Wilson. Of course Jim, Anna and Rose are providing vocals with Dad pulling double duty with vocals and guitar. The recording took place at the Burrus Mills Studio in Saginaw, Texas on April 23, 1940.
