A new study indicates elderly Japanese people are seeking prison time... for the food, shelter and healthcare that comes with getting locked up.

As reported by the Financial Times, the study says there's good reason to suspect a wave of shoplifting is the result of elderly people trying to get convicted.
The Times reports Japan’s prison system is being driven to budgetary crisis by demographics, a welfare shortfall, and repeat offending retirees.
According to a researcher in the article, the petty crimes are part of a vicious cycle.
Once released, he says the elderly immediately turn to crime because they don't have money or family.
Some of the elderly in the study had repeated the same crime over six times.

Bruce, this trend, in part, stems from Japan's rapidly aging society,... 40 percent of which will be over the age of 65 by 2060.

The aging society is putting an enormous strain on the state's public assistance system... and this report is saying,... stealing a sandwich many times, is a shot at going to prison.
