Ultrasound in speech pathology

Ultrasound can be used in speech pathology for a variety of purposes but is used by the HNEkidshealth Community Health Services Speech Pathology team to support children with speech sound disorders that are particularly hard to treat. The ultrasound probe is placed under the client’s tongue and an image is provided on an attached computer, displaying the client’s tongue movements as they speak. It therefore provides a ‘snapshot’ of tongue movements that allow the speech pathologist to better guide the client. It also provides the client with an image of their tongue so they can adjust their movements and produce sounds accurately.
