It is a craft that only a few people in the world have mastered: making glass eyes. Yannick Müller-Uri is a sixth-generation ocularist. First, he produces the blank: he blows a glass sphere with a deceptively real iris and pupil that resembles a human eyeball. From this, he shapes the individual eye prosthesis for the patient over a gas flame so that it fits perfectly into the eye socket.

It is not just the color of the iris that matters - tiny veins and the whites of the eyes are reproduced down to the last detail. It takes seven years to train as an ocularist - which not only requires enormous sensitivity, but also a very special empathy for the patient's fate. The sense of achievement is all the greater when, at the end, the artificial eye can hardly be distinguished from the real one.
