The first step of getting colors on a Minecraft server’s #MOTD is actually finding where the message of the day is located. Well, it is actually pretty simple. You can find a Minecraft server’s message of the day in the ‘server.properties’ file.
To change your Minecraft server’s message of the day, open the server.properties file with Notepad, and find the ‘motd=’ section. You will put your server’s message of the day right after the ‘=’ sign. However, if you just put in text here, it will look all boring and basically like play text in Minecraft.
If you want to stand out on the Minecraft server list, you will need to add colors to your Minecraft MOTD. To do this, go to the link in the description above, and scroll down until you see ‘MOTD Colors’. These are the color codes that must be used for a Minecraft message of the day. You will find all of the different #Colors that you can use in your MOTD as well as all of the different formatting options you have for a message of the day.
For example, you can bold, underline, strike-through, and italicize text text in your message of the day without any issues whatsoever. As far as colors go, you have 16 different color options to chose from really giving you a lot of fun options when it comes to setting the color of a MOTD.
To add the color and formatting codes to your message of the day, just place them right before the text you want to be that color in format. For example, a red, bold, and underlined MOTD would look like this '\u00A7c\u00A7l\u00A7nMinecraft Server'. One thing to not is that the color you want the text to be goes before the formatting codes, so the layout will always be 'color code, formatting codes, text'. This will all go in the server.properties file right next to 'motd='. Once you have it there, save your server.properties files, and restart your Minecraft server. When you do, your MOTD will now appear on the server list!
