The EU's Digital Services Act (DSA) and Digital Markets Act have become a global benchmark for protecting consumers and their fundamental rights online. But have they been properly implemented and could we protect people online more efficiently? In this debate, Parliament members will ask European Commission's representatives about the measures taken since DSA rules were applied in February 2024. The debate will focus on potential breaches of the legislation by TikTok, Meta, X and AliExpress. In light of recent accusations against Telegram for allegedly enabling criminal activity, Parliament members may also ask whether the platform will be subject to stricter scrutiny. Since the adoption of the DSA, more countries are starting to consider similar proposals and laws to make online platforms accountable for the wellbeing of their users, including United Kingdom's Online Safety Act, Canada’s Online Harms Bill, Australia’s Online Safety Act and United States’ Kids Online Safety Act.
