Once, a man asked Gautama Buddha about the worth of human life. In response, Buddha gave him a shining stone and instructed him to find its value without selling it. The man took the stone to different vendors in the market.

First, he approached an orange seller who offered a dozen oranges for it. Then, he went to a vegetable vendor who offered a sack of potatoes. Next, he visited a goldsmith who was amazed by the stone and initially offered 1 lakh gold coins, increasing his offer to 5 lakh gold coins, but the man declined.

Finally, the man went to a diamond merchant. The merchant was mesmerized by the stone’s beauty, placed it on a red velvet cloth, and declared it priceless, stating that its value couldn't be measured even if the whole world were sold.

Puzzled by these varying evaluations, the man returned to Buddha and recounted his experiences. He then asked Buddha to explain the worth of human life. Buddha smiled and explained that just as the stone's value varied according to the knowledge and capacity of each person, human life is similarly valued differently by different people. He emphasized that people will value you according to their own perspectives, but your true worth is priceless and will be recognized eventually.

Buddha's lesson highlighted that often people settle for less than they deserve because they don't know their own worth. He urged the man to understand that self-worth is determined by oneself, not by others' opinions. Therefore, one should not let others define their value, but should set their own worth and refuse to be underestimated.

The lesson from this story is about understanding and valuing one's own worth. Gautama Buddha uses the analogy of the shining stone to illustrate that the value of an object, much like the value of a human life, is subjective and can vary greatly depending on the perspectives and knowledge of others.

Key takeaways from the story include:

Self-Worth is Intrinsic: Just as the stone's true value was far greater than what most people initially offered, human life is inherently valuable and priceless. Your worth is not determined by others' opinions or valuations.

Perception Varies: Different people will see and value you differently based on their own understanding, capacity, and perspective. These varying evaluations do not reflect your true worth.

Recognize Your Own Value: It’s important to know your own worth and not settle for less than you deserve. Your value should be set by yourself and not be influenced by how others perceive you.

Patience for True Recognition: Eventually, your true value will be recognized by those who have the insight and understanding to see it, much like the diamond merchant recognized the stone's worth.

Self-Respect and Confidence: Don't allow others to define you or underestimate your value. Maintain your self-respect and confidence, and others will eventually come to appreciate your true worth.

In summary, the story teaches that self-worth comes from within and should not be dictated by external judgments. By recognizing and valuing oneself appropriately, one can achieve a more fulfilling and respected existence.
