The joint British-Indian army expedition, commanded by General Gerald Graham had two objectives: The first would be to bring the Dervish general, Osman Digna, to heel. Despite, his defeats at El Teb and Tamai, the year before, Digna had managed to re-assert his control of the region. His defeat would prove to the British public that the war was being taken to the Sudanese. The second purpose of the expedition was an ambitious plan to construct a 280 mile railway across the inhospitable desert linking General Sir Garnet Wolseley’s Nile expedition to the Red Sea coast - a much shorter supply line than his current one all the way up the Nile from Egypt. The highpoint of the expedition was the British victory over a Dervish army at the battle of Tofrek on the 22nd March 1885. Yet, within weeks of General McNeill’s victory at Tofrek, the British campaign in there Sudan was wound down due to a war scare with Russia over India. On the 17th May 1885, just over 2 months after landing, General Graham and most of his Suakin Field Force were evacuated from Sudan. Just 20 of the 280 miles of railway had been completed and Osman Digna remained in the field. The Nile Expedition was wound up and General Sir Garnet Wolseley returned to Britain, never to lead an army in the field again. An interesting footnote to the Suakin expedition was the arrival of a contingent of 700 men from New South Wales. They were the first Australian unit to serve abroad on active service - 30 years before Gallipoli. This is the intriguing, arguably pointless and largely forgotten story of the Second Suakin Expedition in Sudan, 1885. #secondsuakinexpedition #battleoftofrek #generalgordon Chapters 0:00 Introduction 1:43 The British in Sudan 2:39 First Suakin Expedition 1884 4:37 Second Suakin Expedition 1885 6:03 The Suakin Field Force 8:09 General McNeill’s Zeriba 12:39 The Battle of Tofrek 15:38 Australia’s First Battle Honour 17:06 End of the Expedition 20:15 The History Chap Follow me at: www.thehistorychap.com Instagram:bit.ly/3iySrAj Facebook:bit.ly/37IUfkH youtube.com/c/TheHistoryChap My name is Chris Green ("The History Chap") and I am on a mission to share the amazing history of Britain so that we can appreciate where we have come from and why we are here. History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens. So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life. My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!" Just for the record, I do have a history degree and continue to have a passion for the subject I studied.
