Our very enjoyable walk up
Our very enjoyable walk up Plynlimon to the source of the River Severn (Afon Hafren) in August 2020.
To find the car park, search for Hafren Forest Car Park & Toilet Block on Google Maps. It's about six miles outside of Llanidloes, Powys. We got there around 11:30 on a Saturday morning in August, and there was plenty of parking available.
We found that the information online about the walks can be a bit confusing. It wasn't entirely clear to us in advance if the trail to the source was 8 miles there, 8 miles back (16 mile round trip); or four miles there, four miles back to the car park (8 mile round trip). As we found, it is definitely just an 8 mile total round trip.
It was such a gorgeous walk to the source, on a largely fine and sunny day. Not too many people around, and those that we did see were all very friendly. It's not an especially challenging or exhausting walk, but you do need a moderate level of fitness and stamina, you will be walking for around 4 hours in total.
