How to Insulate a Crawl Space with a Dirt Floor

In this video home renovation brothers Dave and Rich demonstrate how to insulate a crawl space.
In this instance we focused on foil faced r-13 insulation on the exterior walls of the crawl space. This doubled the insulation on 2 of the 3 exterior walls. After adding the wall insulation, we covered the crawl space floor; a dirt floor and gravel floor with a 6 mil vapor barrier.
The goal was to keep moisture out of the space and reflect any heat back into the space rather than letting it seep outside. We have several HVAC ducts traveling through that crawl space and though they are insulated, any leaks in them will hopefully be captured by the addition of this foil faced insulating of the crawl space.
Insulation for a crawl space under a house are varied. Of the many crawl space insulation options available, we opted for typical r-13 fiberglass which was placed over aging r-13 fiberglass insulation. That made our crawl space insulation r-value upwards of r-20 to r-26. To maximize effectiveness of the insulation we added foil tape to the seams.
Be sure and wear a respirator, gloves and eye protection!
One final tip: do not let the insulation sit on the ground. Leave a 1 inch gap so that the fiberglass does not have the chance to wick moisture from the ground. Insulation sitting on the ground floor will be flagged in our area by inspectors too.
