STORYLINE:
The influential Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr on Thursday called on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League to meet and show its support for Islam following the notification that the Quran was potentially going to be burnt during a protest in Sweden.

Protesters angered by the planned burning of a copy of the Quran by an Iraqi man in Sweden stormed the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad Thursday, overrunning the diplomatic compound and starting a fire.

Hours later, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani cut diplomatic ties with Sweden.

Al-Sadr also called for laws to criminalise the burning of the Quran.

"Burning the Quran must be considered a crime," he said.
